Why Your Water is Staining Your Sinks and Tubs
Iron and manganese are naturally occurring minerals found in both well water and some municipal supplies. At elevated concentrations, they cause staining in sinks, tubs, and on laundry. Iron leaves rust-orange staining while manganese causes darker, brownish-black discoloration that’s often harder to identify but equally damaging over time.
Beyond the staining, both minerals affect the taste of your water and, at higher concentrations, can accelerate wear on pipes, fixtures, and water-using appliances.
Iron and Manganese Aren't the Same Problem
Iron and manganese are related but distinct — they often appear together in well water, but they respond differently to treatment. Iron shows up at lower concentrations and is generally easier to detect visually. Manganese can be present at levels that cause real damage before the discoloration becomes obvious.
The right removal system depends on which minerals are present and at what concentrations. A water test gives us the full picture before we recommend anything.
Choose Whole-House Filtration for a Lasting Solution
Iron and manganese are best treated before the water reaches your home’s plumbing. Whole-house filtration helps prevent staining, protects your plumbing and appliances, and delivers cleaner water to every faucet in your home.
Every water supply is different, so the right system depends on the mineral levels present, your water source, and household water demand. We provide professional testing, installation, maintenance, and repairs to keep your system performing reliably for years to come.

We recently had a immediate loss of water. We called Clear Water and they sent Demitrius out within a couple hours. He did a great job of explaining everything and walking through how to address the problem. Demitrius was very helpful and came out the next day with the parts and got it fixed, amazing turnaround time and customer service!Posted on Google meggan WeeseTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We can't say enough good things about Clearwater Pump & Well Service. They truly went above and beyond to help us resolve a very frustrating issue with our irrigation pump and drive. After another company installed the wrong drive, Clearwater stepped in and worked tirelessly to find a solution. Before determining that the drive needed to be replaced, they spent hours at our home and on the phone with the drive manufacturer's customer support and technical team, doing everything possible to get the existing drive working. Their dedication, persistence, and commitment to helping us were exceptional. A huge thank you to Paul and his outstanding team—Mike, service technician Dimo, and electrician Jon. Everyone was knowledgeable, professional, patient, and genuinely cared about getting the job done right. We highly recommend Clearwater Pump & Well Service to anyone looking for honest, reliable, and experienced professionals. If you want a company that stands behind its work and goes the extra mile for its customers, Clearwater is the one to call.Posted on Google marilyn slatteryTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I called a few companies before Clear Water as I had used them in the past. No response. Clear Water response was prompt and courteous as I was not a current customer Demo came at the appointed time and was very efficient. What we hoped to be an easy fix turned into a multiple hour job and even though he had to call in reinforcements he was a pleasure to work with. His day had to be extended because of my issue but he remained polite and committed to my needs. The men who worked on my well were terrific. The office personnel was professional and accommodating and the entire experience was positive. I highly recommend Clear Water and although I hope not to have to use them again, I wouldn’t hesitate if an issue arose.Posted on Google Jeff KalowskiTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My well pump died in the early evening and when I put a call into them they got back to me right away and tried to trouble-shoot the problem with me and finally determined that the well pump had failed. They were at my house the next morning at 8am and replaced the pump right away. Their communication was outstanding with both the office staff and the technicians. These guys were terrific and I would highly recommend them. Iron and Manganese FAQs
Iron is not typically harmful at the concentrations most homeowners encounter. It's primarily a water quality and infrastructure problem — affecting taste, causing staining, and contributing to long-term wear on plumbing and appliances. At very high levels, it can be a health concern, which is another reason to test.
Iron staining is typically orange, rust-colored, or reddish-brown. Manganese staining tends to be darker — brownish to almost black. If you're seeing both colors in different areas of your home, you may have both minerals present, which is common in well water.
A water softener can handle small amounts of dissolved iron, but it isn't designed for iron removal and won't be effective at moderate to high iron levels. Whole-home filtration systems are the right solution for significant iron or manganese concentrations.
Both minerals occur naturally in soil and bedrock. As groundwater moves through rock and sediment, it picks up iron and manganese. The concentration depends on the geology of your area and the depth of your well.
A water test is the only accurate way to measure it. We offer water testing — ask about it when you schedule.
