Concerned About PFAS? Clear Water Has Solutions
PFAS, or “forever” chemicals, are a common concern in both private wells and public water supplies throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island. If you’re concerned about PFAS in your home’s water, Clear Water Filtration, Pump, & Well Service can help you identify the issue and determine the right path forward.
With more than a decade of experience addressing local water quality problems, we provide practical guidance and treatment options based on the conditions found in your water.
Why PFAS Are a Concern
PFAS are highly persistent chemicals that can accumulate in the environment and the human body over time. Research has linked exposure to certain PFAS with a range of potential health effects, including:
- Increased cholesterol levels
- Changes in liver function
- Reduced immune response
- Developmental effects
- Increased risk of certain cancers
Because of these potential health concerns, PFAS have become an important drinking water issue for homeowners in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, particularly in areas with known groundwater contamination.
Start With a Water Test
Because PFAS can’t be detected by taste, smell, or appearance, testing is the only way to determine whether these contaminants are present in your water and at what concentrations. Laboratory testing can also help identify whether long-chain PFAS, short-chain PFAS, or a combination of both are present, which can influence the type of treatment that’s most appropriate.
Our team works with independent water testing laboratories to provide reliable, actionable information. Once your results are available, we can review them with you and help you understand what they mean for your home and your water.
This is the best way to begin addressing your home’s water quality and ensure you don’t spend money on unnecessary water treatment equipment.
PFAS Water Treatment Options
There are several effective ways to reduce PFAS in residential water. The two most common approaches are whole-house filtration and point-of-use reverse osmosis, each offering a different level of coverage for your home.
For homeowners who want to reduce PFAS throughout the home, a whole-house filtration system may be the right approach. However, a standard whole-house filter isn’t enough. Effective whole-home PFAS treatment requires special media, such as catalytic granular activated carbon (GAC) for long-chain PFAS or anion exchange resin for short-chain PFAS and broader PFAS reduction.
Our team can recommend and install a whole-house PFAS treatment system based on your water test results, helping ensure the equipment is appropriate for the contaminants found in your water.
If your main concern is reducing PFAS in the water you drink and cook with, reverse osmosis is another option. RO systems are typically installed under your kitchen sink and provide treated water through a dedicated drinking water faucet.
Reverse osmosis can reduce both long-chain and short-chain PFAS, along with a range of other dissolved contaminants, making it an excellent option if you’re looking for high-quality drinking water.
We can help you compare a point-of-use system with whole-house treatment and install the option that best matches your water quality needs.

We recently had a immediate loss of water. We called Clear Water and they sent Demitrius out within a couple hours. He did a great job of explaining everything and walking through how to address the problem. Demitrius was very helpful and came out the next day with the parts and got it fixed, amazing turnaround time and customer service!Posted on Google meggan WeeseTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We can't say enough good things about Clearwater Pump & Well Service. They truly went above and beyond to help us resolve a very frustrating issue with our irrigation pump and drive. After another company installed the wrong drive, Clearwater stepped in and worked tirelessly to find a solution. Before determining that the drive needed to be replaced, they spent hours at our home and on the phone with the drive manufacturer's customer support and technical team, doing everything possible to get the existing drive working. Their dedication, persistence, and commitment to helping us were exceptional. A huge thank you to Paul and his outstanding team—Mike, service technician Dimo, and electrician Jon. Everyone was knowledgeable, professional, patient, and genuinely cared about getting the job done right. We highly recommend Clearwater Pump & Well Service to anyone looking for honest, reliable, and experienced professionals. If you want a company that stands behind its work and goes the extra mile for its customers, Clearwater is the one to call.Posted on Google marilyn slatteryTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I called a few companies before Clear Water as I had used them in the past. No response. Clear Water response was prompt and courteous as I was not a current customer Demo came at the appointed time and was very efficient. What we hoped to be an easy fix turned into a multiple hour job and even though he had to call in reinforcements he was a pleasure to work with. His day had to be extended because of my issue but he remained polite and committed to my needs. The men who worked on my well were terrific. The office personnel was professional and accommodating and the entire experience was positive. I highly recommend Clear Water and although I hope not to have to use them again, I wouldn’t hesitate if an issue arose.Posted on Google Jeff KalowskiTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My well pump died in the early evening and when I put a call into them they got back to me right away and tried to trouble-shoot the problem with me and finally determined that the well pump had failed. They were at my house the next morning at 8am and replaced the pump right away. Their communication was outstanding with both the office staff and the technicians. These guys were terrific and I would highly recommend them. One of the best customer experiences I've ever had.Posted on Google Adam GuilmetteTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Amazing customer service! Frequently Asked Questions About PFAS
Long-chain PFAS, such as PFOA and PFOS, were widely used before being phased out in many applications. Short-chain PFAS were introduced as replacements, but they are still a health concern and are more difficult to remove.
PFAS cannot be detected by taste, smell, or appearance. The only reliable way to know if they are present is through laboratory water testing.
Reverse osmosis is highly effective for reducing many types of PFAS in drinking water. Whole-home systems can also be effective, especially when using activated carbon or ion exchange, but the best option depends on your water quality and treatment goals.
Activated carbon can reduce many PFAS compounds, especially long-chain PFAS. However, effectiveness varies by filter type, water chemistry, and the specific PFAS present.
Private wells can be more vulnerable because they aren’t routinely monitored or treated by a public water system. Homes near airports, industrial sites, landfills, or areas where firefighting foam has been used may face a higher risk of PFAS contamination.
